The Joiner & Etc. DVD
|
|
|
This DVD is a companion to the book "The Joiner and Cabinet Maker." It contains three narrated slideshows of the construction process, plus SketchUp drawings of the three projects featured in the book.
|
For those woodworkers who want even more detailed construction information, there's is a data DVD available that contains slideshows and detailed highly 3D construction drawings. This DVD works in both PC and Mac computers.
The DVD is not a substitute for the book – there is no cut list or highly detailed construction information. But rather it is a way to amplify the hands-on aspects of the book's construction chapters for those woodworkers who need additional detail or who are visual learners.
On the DVD
Narrated Slideshows
There are three narrated slideshows on this DVD that you can play on your personal computer (not on a standard television). Each slideshow is a QuickTime movie (a .mov file). You can play these files with a wide variety of free media players available on the Web.
You can download a free QuickTime player (for a Mac or a PC) at Quicktime.com.
Each of the slideshows walks you through the construction of a project in “The Joiner and Cabinet Maker.” The slideshows include photos that were not included in the book (for space reasons), and some useful construction details. Most of all, I hope the slideshows will give you a good overview of the whole process of building each project and help amplify the text in the book.
SketchUp Drawings
Also included on this disc are complete SketchUp drawings for each of the projects. These drawings reflect how I built each project and should prove helpful to anyone who wants to become familiar with traditional construction.
SketchUp is a free program from Google, and one of the greatest free woodworking tools ever created. You need the free SketchUp program (available for both Mac and PC) to view and manipulate these files. You can download the program by going here:
http://sketchup.google.com/
Once you download SketchUp, you can quickly get started by watching a few video tutorials:
http://sketchup.google.com/training/videos.html
These tutorials will greatly shorten your learning curve. Once you know the basics of SketchUp, you will be able to alter these drawings to your heart’s content. You can take each project apart and put it back together. You can explore all the joinery.
